What makes the Estonian educational system effective?
Professor Eve Eisenschmidt, Professor of Educational Leadership; Vice-Rector, Tallinn University, Estonia

The recent PISA data published in 2023 show that there has been a global decline in students' competencies in mathematics, reading, and science. What is the reason for this, and what exactly do these figures indicate? Among the top-performing countries, Western countries have fallen in the rankings (the first Western country, Estonia, ranks 7th in the overall results). What explains this? What is the goal of Western education? The PISA survey also covers several indicators related to students' mental health and well-being (psychological well-being, resilience, agency and engagement, the quality of personal relationships, school-life balance, etc.). Do these indicators nuance the academic performance results? How Estonia achieved such outstanding academic results?
